SFSU Account Help

Your SFSU ID is a nine-digit number assigned to you during the student application or hiring process. Your SFSU Login and Password and multi-factor authentication (MFA) device will allow you to access SFSU resources including: 
Wi-Fi, email, Global Protect VPN, Box at SFSU, Online Course Content, and other web resources.

Use your SFSU Account as your Single Sign-on (SSO) at the SFSU Sign in page

  • SFSU ID: nine-digit ID number, e.g., 912345678
  • SFSU Login: 912345678@sfsu.edu and your password
  • MFA Account: required to use SF State Resources
  • Email address: send and receive messages, e.g., accountname@sfsu.edu

Password Change Policy

In order to comply with security audits users must change their password every 365 days.

Use this tool to change your current password using your SFSU account. 

Update Your Personal Profile

SFSU needs your correct contact information to verify your identity and reach you if needed. Keep your information updated.

Important Tips:

  • Don’t Share Personal Info: Keep your personal information private.
  • Watch Out for Phishing: University accounts are often targeted. Don’t click on suspicious email links.
  • Check Your Email: Make sure the external email you gave to SFSU is one you check often. Update it if needed. Update it if needed.

  2. With a Reset Code: Use the Reset Password using a Reset Code tool.

Deprovisioned Accounts

Why was my account disabled?

  • Separation Disable
    • Former employee 
  • Academic Standing
    • Student took no classes in last year or are academically disqualified
    • Student graduated (deactivates after 1 year)

Locked Accounts

Why was my account locked?

  • Time Limited Lock:
    • Too many failed password attempts
    • After changing your password - a different device is actively trying to auto-log in with previous password
  • Administrative Security Lock:
    • Account was compromised

Compromised

Universities email accounts are targets for phishing scams. Phishing emails can trick recipients into providing sensitive information like personal information, account passwords, credit card information, or banking records.

If your account is not working, check the external email you provided to SFSU. Compromised accounts receive an email with instructions on how to regain access.

Important: Include your SFSU ID number or SFSU email address when contacting the ITS Service Desk.

Security Reminder:

  • SFSU will never ask for your account details or Duo authentication codes.
  • Protect your account: Duo is your last line of defense.
  • If someone asks for a Duo code, change your password immediately as your account might be compromised.
